The Giant of South London grows on the south-western edge of Dulwich Park and is one of the city’s most spectacular trees. It has attained a grand, symmetrical form befitting its size and age. There are many fine trees here, including old oaks harking back to a pre-1890 rural landscape, but this one is peerless, and, being the lone Turkey oak, differs from the others most noticeably by its bristly cupules, or acorn cups.

Join me in Dulwich today!
I’m sure many will want to visit this tree, and so can I suggest today, Sunday 18th May 2025 would be a good day to go? And if you find yourself in Dulwich, I might also suggest you come along to the talk I will be giving about this and many other amazing trees, many of which have featured in these posts, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. My talk is about Tree Hunting, my new book and takes place at 2:00. It is part of the Dulwich Festival, hope to see you there!
Really enjoyed hearing you share your knowledge on the trees on the Bloomsbury Square walk yesterday and look forward to getting know more trees through your book!
