154. Whitehall Climber
An arboreal attraction just a short walk from the other West End sights.
Two old southern catalpas, probably original plantings from 1870, are iconic features of Whitehall Gardens. Don’t dwell for too long on the western tree, which is upright but ailing. The eastern tree, which is nearly horizontal and propped, is flourishing. Its heart-shaped leaves are luxurious in summer, and release a medicinal scent when crushed. Weary parents on family days out can look on as children make use of its appealing form for climbing.
