34. Acocks Green Oak
Calming traffic, an oak grows in the middle of a suburban Birmingham street forcing cars and vans to slow down as they approach.
Like many oaks that can be seen around Birmingham, the Acocks Green Oak is a remnant from a former landscape. Maybe the Forest of Arden, remembered in the street name, once reached here. Unlike the Jockey Road Oak, a tree in splendid isolation on a Sutton Coldfield pavement, this tree forms the centrepiece of a tree-lined street. It is a veteran, at least a couple of centuries old, and has been pollarded in recent years.Â
