35. UCC Giant Redwood
University campuses are often well-treed, and University College Cork boasts one of the finest campus treescapes in Ireland or Britain.
The University of Cork boasts an attractive, well forested campus which has managed to retain many impressive trees alongside its growing estate of academic buildings. The focus of the campus is provided by a pair of towering nineteenth century giant redwoods next to the Boole Library, the southern tree is most striking and can be admired from the nearby arboretum. The pair are thought to have been planted around 1880 when the UCC campus was significantly extended.

Giant redwood notes
As in Britain, giant redwoods have been planted extensively in Ireland since they were first brought to these shores in the mid-nineteenth century. They are one of the most popular and easily recognised trees, often attaining monumental size within a century. Famously, the native Californian population contains the largest trees in the world, giant redwoods that have lived unmolested for thousands of years. The pressure of climate crises means the relatively small natural population is increasingly under pressure from fire and drought, so it is heartening that a grove of 1,000 trees has been established at Birr Castle in County Offaly.
