80. Dumbarton Field Maple
Exciting trees crop up in all sorts of unlikely places and in Dumbarton a veteran field maple can be seen on the edge of an industrial estate.
Until 2004, Scotland's fattest pedunculate oak, the Bruce Tree - claimed to have been planted by Robert the Bruce 600 years previously – grew in the grounds of Strathleven House on the edge of an industrial estate. As happens all too frequently it feels, this historic tree was set on fire by vandals, but out of its formidable shadow a long overlooked field maple emerged, quite possibly Scotland’s oldest, and it is now the veteran tree to see.
