105. WG Grace’s Beech
A fine old beech tree in Bristol is loaded with interest for cricket lovers.
Growing high up on Clifton Downs, a great domed beech is one of the few remaining trees marking the first Gloucestershire County Cricket Club pitch laid out in 1860. The legendary cricketer, WG Grace, was the prime mover in setting up the club, and perhaps it was he who planted the trees that defined the pitch boundaries. The first game played here was in 1870 when Gloucestershire beat Surrey.
