134. Inclosure Oak
Centuries ago, Sherwood Forest extended to where a Nottingham oak tree was planted in 1865.
It may come as a surprise to discover the historic Inclosure Oak was not raised from an acorn sourced from Robin Hood’s famed domain of Sherwood Forest. Instead, a cast-iron plaque at the foot of the tree says it grew from an acorn taken from Windsor Great Park and was planted in 1865. This was twenty years after the former common land – the southernmost extent of Sherwood Forest – was gifted to the people of Nottingham by way of the Inclosure Act, which allowed the city’s planned expansion. A surprisingly small tree for seventeen decades’ growth.
