196. Merthyr Giant
An awe-inspiring tree shows another side to a Welsh industrial town.
Thomastown Park was Merthyr’s first, opening in 1902 on the site of a former quarry, then on the eastern edge of town. Like many parks of this period, it was an attempt to bring green space within easy reach of, particularly, the working people of a burgeoning industrial town. Today it is much loved, and has many mature trees, the finest being a spectacular giant redwood, with spongy bark that is hard to resist caressing.
