52. Abbey Green Plane
A vast plane tree in Bath appears to be as old as the Georgian buildings surrounding it, but could be considerably younger.
Abbey Green is a paved piazza tucked away in the close tangle of streets south of the medieval Abbey, its prettiness made exceptional by the enormous London plane at its centre. Research suggests the tree was planted as recently as 1880 despite appearing very old indeed. Its great size could have been hastened by its roots reaching into the spring feeding the nearby Roman baths.
