59. Chantry Plane
Standing proudly in the centre of Andover, a London plane demonstrates why this species is so appropriate for urban situations.
Perhaps the fine old London plane in Andover’s Market Place was originally planted to offer shelter to market traders and their customers. Now it separates old Andover – it grows just to the north of the classical Guildhall – from new, in the shape of the Chantry Shopping Centre. It is still a much loved feature of the town centre, and is distinguished by an encircling metal bench.
