83. The Hungry Tree
A nineteenth-century plane, slowly consuming a park bench, is a must-see for every Dublin visitor.
Dublin’s most famous tree has to be The Hungry Tree. Hundreds of column inches have been devoted to it and every self-respecting Dublin guidebook features it. For good reason too. An old London plane at Kings Inn Park – perhaps 150 years old – has been quietly munching its way through a cast iron bench for decades, and now only the arms and two front legs are all that’s left to go.Â
