92. Great War Plane
A memorial tree – that still stands – was a cause célèbre in the battle for Sheffield’s trees.
‘The trees in Western Road and Gillott Street were planted in grateful appreciation of the part taken by former pupils of this school in the Great War.’ So a memorial plaque on the wall of Westways School reads. The plaque, and a condemned London plane with a characterfully curving branch at the corner of Northfield Road, were rallying points in the battle for Sheffield’s trees. The tree survives.
